Performance degradation at high-water mark is a "known problem" with Squid
1.1. We hope to be able to fix it in 1.2 (or a bit later) with a SquidFS
that among other wonderful things will not require unlink() or any other
system calls to remove objects from the cache. This will improve the
performance without adding a new guess-how-to-tune configuration option.

Stay tuned, :)

Alex.
