dnsserver: Host not found (authoritative)

Dear All,

 I'll thank a lot if anyone can explain me the following behaviour
and/or point me to good sources of information where to discover it
myself (I have already gone through the FAQ, mail archives and
 O'Reilly DNS book).

# /usr/local/squid/bin/dnsserver
esc.syrres.com
$fail esc.syrres.com
$message DNS Domain 'esc.syrres.com' is invalid: Host not found
(authoritative).
$end

# dig @srcvax.syrres.com +aaonly esc.syrres.com

 I wonder if it might have to do with the '_'
 It is permanent behaviour, or at least for the whole last month.
