non-FAQ memory problems

I have squid running on a Pentium system under Linux 2.0.34, libc 5.4.44.
When I start squid, it uses about 80M of RAM:

nobody 2237 19.8 28.6 74436 73684 ? S N 06:41 0:49 squid -sY

With only 8M of ram available for hot objects, and the disk pool essentially
full (+/- 5% over the past week), squid should not be growing in RAM usage a
whole lot more. Memory_pools are off.

However, given a few days, squid will hit 230-280M of RAM used.

Anyone seen this before?
