I disagree. I prefer binding the origin server to localhost or another
interface / IP alias, and then if the load gets to high move the origin
server to another host.

Of course it is possible to enchance Squid to support rewriting
of Location: headers (redirects) on accelerated or "redirected"
(squid redirects, not HTTP redirects) requests, but some coding
is required to do this.
