Hmm, the problem with '-g' has nothing to do with the gcc version, but with
the produced assambler code.
For testing purpose based on your posting, I copied 2.1PRE1 to our 9.07
system, using gcc 2.7.2.3 and binutils 2.9.1 and squid compiles fine.
I would recommend to install these 2 products in the very special mode
described in the gcc readmes. Look for --with-gnu-as.
