File descriptors -- am I in danger?

Hi everyody!

I configured our ISP's proxy (Squid 1.1.22) using the default options.
Am I in risk of running out of file descriptors if every connected user
browses at once? Counting dialup and leased line customers, we can have
at the worst case 100 simultaneous browsers pointing as our Squid.
Should we alter the kernel or something? We use Slackware 96 with kernel
upgraded to 2.0.35.

And by the way, do you think it's worth the trouble upgrading to 2.0 or
2.1 at the moment?

Cheers
