Simplest isn't always the best suited. If you're running an NT network I'd
suggest using SMB_AUTH then your usernames and passwords for your proxy are
identical to that for you network and centrally administered. It's a
/little/ bit of work to set it up but nothing overly taxing.

You could use authentication. The would provide you with the IP and the
username in the log file.

Unfortunately these meachines are all running DHCP/BOOTP and we are looking
on close on 800 machines. Some of them are dial-up as well and the
assignment of IP addresses for dial-up users are from a pool of addresses

Any other ideas ??

What about using authentication

In all honesty, if you have more than 10 hosts you wouldn't however...

Add lines like the following to /etc/hosts

172.28.0.1 machine1
172.28.0.2 machine2
172.28.0.3 machine3
etc
