Messages logged by Squid 2.2S4 on Digital UNIX 4.0D

Background: Running Squid 2.2stable4 on a Digital UNIX alpha system
recently upgraded to version 4.0D of the operating system. The system is
acting as a caching proxy server and is on the interior of our firewall. It
communicates to systems on the Internet using SOCKS 5r9.

Problem/Question: Since the upgrade, the cache.log files have become quite
large in comparison to their pre-upgrade size as a result of being filled
with messages like the following:

1999/09/17 07:42:24| sslWriteServer: FD 26: write failure: (35) Operation
would block.
1999/09/17 07:42:24| sslWriteServer: FD 26: write failure: (35) Operation
would block.
1999/09/17 07:42:25| sslWriteServer: FD 26: write failure: (35) Operation

1999/09/17 07:42:25| sslWriteServer: FD 26: write failure: (35) Operation
would block.
<repeat for maybe 1000 lines>

My interpretation of the situation is that this is an informational message
 and that Squid is continuing to retry the operation until it succeeds.
(I assume it succeeds; I'm not getting any user complaints.) Other than the
 obvious answer, can someone help me understand what is going on?
Are there actions that I need to take to 'repair' the condition that is
leading to the entries?
