This usually indicates that Squid is already running.

tart squid in my inittab file:

> sq:3:respawn:/usr/local/squid/bin/squid.sh < /dev/null
...
> exec bin/squid -CYs

Yep. There is no -N argument and hence Suqid starts in deamon mode,
detaching itself.
