simple expiry question

Hello,

I'm having problems with updating files on a web server the changes not been
seen by clients using squid 2.2stable4.

The problems occur with apache 1.2.4 and not with 1.3.9.

Files are non html like xls etc.

If I change a file under 1.3.9 then about 10mins later the change is reflected
in squid. However if I do it with 1.2.4 then the files do not change. The squid
config file is mostly the default one. So would some kind person please explain
what is happening and suggest a work around that allows me to keep using 1.2.4
for the time being.
