What kind of proxy? Squid is an HTTP proxy. If Messenger does not
specify what kind of proxy it wants then most likely it wants a
Messenger proxy - an entirely different kind of animal.

on your firewall.

This assumption is wrong. Squid can be used, in conjunction with
a specially configured router, to make an (almost) transparent
HTTP proxy, nothing more.

This sounds rather like Messenger expects some sort of NAT.
