What do your logs say? These are the authorative source on whether Squid
is in fact caching (which it will be doing unless you have explicitly told
it not to).

I don't know what you mean by 'update the DB' - Squid does object
replacement checking much more frequently than every hour. You don't need
to configure this part of Squid's internal operations at all.
