How to upgrade squid without lossing Cache?

Hi,

I have squid 2.2 S5. Ik want to recompile with the asynch I/O option. How
can I reinstall whitout losing my 4 Gibyte cachedir.
I didn't found the answer in the FAQ of Squid.
