OK, the "issue" is the 0.90 raid is completely incompatible with earlier raid.
And RedHat included it as of 2.2.15 or so (? not sure of exact version).

The source for 0.42 if you can't find it elsewhere would be at

The source for raid tools for use with 0.90 raid is at

The .orig.tar.gz is the original distribution.

The -X.diff.gz is the Debian patch (which can be useful, so if you understand
programming to some extent it's worth checking out to see if it has any useful
parts in it even if building on non-Debian).

The Debian archives are a really good place to find sources, I even found that
when wanting to install things on a SunOS 4 box :-)
