squid dead but subsys locked.

hi i am having a a bad problem with squid in that is isnot working
when i do a squid status i get: squid dead but subsys locked
                              squid: ERROR: No running copy

It was working fine for about 4 days after i set it up. I work at a school
and really need some help with this one.
