As I know it works see e.g.:

Second idea is to use identd service (on W'9x and NT there are freeware
version) in conjuction with NT authentification -> if there exist identd
and pointed to existing username -> get the page if not make NT
authentification. Many proceses in Windows (e.g. Real Player and Eudora,
and "Critical updates" works in the background and there is no possibility
to authentificate in style NT).....
