Linux-2.0.35 only supports max 256 filedescriptors. More requires the
kernel sources to be hacked and the kernel rebuilt. My recommendation is
to simply upgrade the system to Linux kernel 2.2 which supports 1024
filedescriptors as standard and can easily be runtime tuned (from 2.2.12
and onwards) to support any number of filedescriptors.
