I think the suggested requirements for squid were taken a lot less mild
and were just aimed at where people think you'd use it. With a good PII
300 and SCSI you probably can go to 1500 users. Personally I've ran squid
on a Dual PII 400 with SCSI at 13000req/min servicing over 3000 users.
Squid in comparison to MS Proxy is a lot more suitable for high
performance. If you are considering a proxy for anything above 500 users
drop MS. If you want something cheap and easily maintainable you can
allways go for a Novell ICS based "appliance" like the ones from Dell.
