The path structure isn't really that much different, only changed to
meed the Linux/RedHat standards..

/usr/local/squid/etc <-> /etc/squid
/usr/local/squid/lib <-> /usr/lib/squid/
/usr/local/squid/cache <-> /var/spool/squid/
/usr/local/squid/logs <-> /var/log/squid/

The key issue is to find to squid.conf. From there you will find all
other paths, and can change them if requried..

If you are not familar with compiling GNU stuff then using the RPM
version is just fine until you are reasonably familar with the softare
and find that you need some feature which requires recompiling.

So I would suggest to go step by step. Start with using the preinstalled
RPM version to get used on Squid, and when need arises, move on to
compile your own from the sources. By then you will quite likely be more
familar with UNIX/Linux and have less problems when building things from
source..

Not that building Squid from the source is very difficult, but it is yet
another step to get right in the setup, and the RPM contains some
goodies that are quite useful, such as automatic scripts for starting
the proxy on boot and log rotation, and well integrated into the linux
distribution.

But yes, the odds are quite high that you sooner or later will find that
you need to compile Squid from the sources because the RPM lacks some
feature that you'd like to use..
