Perhaps this will clarify:

not possible:
------------
 client <- FTP, RFC 959 ----> squid <- FTP RFC 959 -> ftp server

possible:
--------
 client <- HTTP, RFC 2068, etc -> squid <- FTP RFC 959 -> ftp server
 client <- HTTP, RFC 2068, etc -> squid <- HTTP RFC 2068 -> http server
 client <- HTTP, RFC 2068, etc -> squid <- Gopher RFC 1436-> gopher

(I use the term 'client' in all cases because to confuse matters, some
more featureful ftp clients can issue requests via http and through
http-talking caches such as squid.)
