As far as I know, there is no way to do this without modifying the code.

This was actually discussed in some detail on this list very recently.
I think Henrik (or maybe it was Robert?) did a great job explaining that
potential problems with doing this. I think it was about a month ago,
and a search of the archives should turn up some good information.

Besides...where is the benefit to proxying SSL transparently? You can't
cache it, so why send it through the proxy at all?
