[squid-users] Squid as a caching proxy server

Hi everyone.

I have recently set up squid, as a caching proxy server on my LAN.
I have a 56k connection, so thought I'd set up caching to save some
bandwidth, and increase speed of web page fetching.

It seems to work, but when a download is in progress, it isn't a great
deal faster.. I'm not sure why it has to connect to the site, first. (To
check for updates? If so, can you turn this off?)

I have used a windoze caching proxy server (Wingate) and previously
visited webpages were taken from the proxy's HDD almost instantly. Is
there any way to achieve this with squid? Perhaps I can send you my squid
file, if you are willing for me to do this..
There are a few parameters in the squid.conf file that I am not sure
about, and the documentation doesn't mean much to me about these entries.
:)

Thank you in advance for any help
