[squid-users] squid 2.3.s4 mem usage

i am running squid on a i386 box with suse's kernel 2.4.0-smp-4gb (suse
7.1).
the box has 1gb of ram and gets bothered with approx. 70 req/second, which
is quite a nice load.

i have configured 'memory_pools on' with no 'memory_pools_limit' set.
does that explain, why the system uses up so much ram?

i expected at least the 'cached memory' value to be significantly higher...

this is the /proc/meminfo after running squid 52 'cpu' minutes

mem:
total: 1.052.852.224
used: 1.050.107.904
free: 2.744.320
shared: 0
buffers: 41.963.520
cached: 112.836.608

memtotal: 1028176 kb
memfree: 2680kb
memshared: 0kb
buffers: 40980kb
cached: 110192kb
active: 53640kb
inact_dirty: 92188kb
inact_clean: 5524kb
inact_target: 1412kb
hightotal: 131008kb
highfree: 1048kb
swaptotal: 514040kb
swapfree: 511360kb

the squid process is ~390m (top output) - other 'hungry' processes are not
existent on
that machine.

Best regards
