Last time I checked the situation was the reverse. Worked fine using
Netscape with Squid as proxy, but when using IE only the host name was
sent to Squid..

Squid knows about the Internet style URL login information
(username:password@host) for all Internet URL schemes it supports.

Do you get an error message from Squid or from the browser?

How is your browsers configured to use Squid as a proxy?
a) Manual configuration
b) Automatic Proxy PAC configuration
c) Transparent interception of port 80 traffic by the proxy
