Hi,

I could use some help with configuration on Squid 2.4.STABLE2. I've used
Squid 1.1.22 for years and love it. Now, I just installed a new Free BSD 4.4
box and installed Squid 2.4.STABLE2. I'm getting some weird results. The proxy
is set-up on news.theLink.net on Port 333. If I use that in my browser proxy
settings, I get nothing. If I telnet news.theLink.net 333 and then give the
command GET / , that simply times out. The only response I get is if I
explicitly go to the proxy server on Port 333:

http://news.thelink.net:333/

The box has 13 GB for proxy cache and my cache_dir is set-up as:

cache_dir ufs /squid/ 13000 540 256

I ran the squid -z, so all my directories are created. It appears that Squid
never releases from root, implying that it is not starting up properly. In
/var/log/messages, I have these messages for the last couple hours:

Feb 14 09:44:39 news squid[8733]: Squid Parent: child process 10090 started
Feb 14 09:44:45 news /kernel: pid 10090 (squid), uid 65534: exited on signal 6
Feb 14 09:44:45 news squid[8733]: Squid Parent: child process 10090 exited due
to signal 6
Feb 14 09:44:48 news squid[8733]: Squid Parent: child process 10093 started
Feb 14 09:44:54 news /kernel: pid 10093 (squid), uid 65534: exited on signal 6
Feb 14 09:44:54 news squid[8733]: Squid Parent: child process 10093 exited due
to signal 6
Feb 14 09:44:58 news squid[8733]: Squid Parent: child process 10096 started
Feb 14 11:04:51 news /kernel: pid 10096 (squid), uid 65534: exited on signal 6
Feb 14 11:04:51 news squid[8733]: Squid Parent: child process 10096 exited due
to signal 6
Feb 14 11:04:54 news squid[8733]: Squid Parent: child process 10190 started

Then, in the cache.log file, I get messages like these non-stop after indexing
all the directories:

2002/02/14 09:56:37| cbdataAdd: 0x85f6340
2002/02/14 09:56:37| cbdataFree: 0x85f6340

2002/02/14 09:56:38| storeMaintainSwapSpace: f=0.000000, max_scan=100,
max_remove=10

Any idea what is going on or what I should look at? Thank you for any guidance.

Sincerely,

Robert H. Traphan
