You need a little bit more than that, and is why there is SOCKS for
dumb generic proxying...

No, adding SOCKS to Squid is not a smart idea, especially not
considering that there is good SOCKS proxies available..

If you want a package which more or less resembles the basic
capabilities of MS Proxy with the client software installed then
combine Squid with a SOCKS proxy, and configure your browser to use
Squid as a proxy and wrap all your other applications in a SOCKS
wrapper (runsocks on UNIX and there is a WINSOCK wrapper DLL for
Windows somewhere..)
