Correct. Linux-2.2 and earlier do not require any special Squid
configure options for transparent proxying.
However, Linux-2.4 requires --enable-linux-netfilter, no matter if
iptables or ipchains are used to do the interception (both are
modules ontop of netfilter in Linux-2.4).
