I've started running to Windows Update not working right as well.
Specifically it seems to either be atrociously slow (taking 10-15 minutes to
load a list of potential updates), or it just does nothing and the browser
(IE6 on the machines I've tested it on) hangs and has to be killed.

Machines not going through my Squid proxy (2.4Stable6, FreeBSD 4.5-STABLE)
load up Windows Update stuff nearly instantaneously.

It would appear that MS has switched Win2k over to V4 of Windows Update
fairly recently, as in the last couple of weeks at the longest. This is
significant because XP, which the original poster was using, has always used
V4.

I'm guessing there's something about V4 that doesn't play nice with Squid,
but I don't know what.
