 No, some browsers will append the trailing /
 automatically when talking to a remote webserver,
 perhaps due to certain headers and info returned
 by the remote webserver.
 Most probably, while in 'proxy-mode', the
 browser will only forward , the url.
 to the proxy server , e.g. SQUID in this case.
 And squid will only act as as 'neutral party'.
