[squid-users] Squid/Network timeout troubleshooting

Hi,

Recently, we've noticed that our main squid box has timed out. Some
browsers get a "connection refused" or "operation timed out" error when
attempting to contact the proxy. This proxy simply CARPs all requests
to three other dedicated proxy boxes that connect to the Internet.

I've followed most of the tips suggested before, such as increasing
the open-file limit using ulimit (set it to 8192 from 1024), adding
more RAM (although this CARPing box doesn't cache), and tweaked some of
the settings for the network card. The box is serving, on the average,
some 100-200 connections per minute, with a user base of about 500
during the mornings, and 100 in the evenings.

Any advise I'd really appreciate. Thanks.
