RE: [squid-users] Squid resolving hostnames

I have windows based workstations going through a linux squid proxy. WINS is
in place for resolving names on the network. The machine doing the squid
caching is a linux box that is unaware of WINS.

Squid uses the DNS server which was specified on resolv.conf unless you
specifed a different one using dns_nameservers 10.0.0.y 200.152.25.x. So if
the server RUNNING SQUID can translate names peharps you built squid with
some specific option, didn't you?
I'm using squid on a Macintosh and my network is Sun, Digital, HP, NT, BSD
and so on working quite smoothly.
As a test, I changed the option I mentioned to you this morning (log_fqdn
on) and it did work out with the following result:

bvac01.infraero.gov.br mreis - [03/Sep/2002:14:45:20 -0300] "GET
http://www.itau
.com.br/campanhas/pic/primavera/img/mn_02_off.gif HTTP/1.0" 200 2269
TCP_REFRESH
_HIT:DIRECT

Where:

bvac01.infraero.gov.br is 10.52.19.6
and mreis is the name of the authenticated user.

Pretty strange so please let me know if the SERVER can resolve name.

Cheers

Mac

If you ping the name of the machines does it return the IP address?

There are a few NT4 servers that are the domain controllers/dhcp
servers/wins server. A linux box that is doing squid caching and dns. At 3
remote locations, there are cisco routers providing DHCP.

Are you using WINS?
If you ping the name of the machines does it return the IP address?
Can't be hard to solve, I'll help you. ;)

This option is set to on. Still only the ip's show up in the logs. The
machine doing the DHCP is not the same one doing the squid-caching.

Hello Kevin,

It's quite simple. Just change the option

from -> log_fqdn off
to -> log_fqdn on

on your squid.conf file.
By default this option is off.

My best regards,

Cildemac Marques

Subject: [squid-users] SARG + Squid

Currently I am using SARG to parse my squid logs to html for accounting
purposes. I would like it to take it a step further by resolving the IP
addresses to workstation names. All the workstations are given addresses
via
DHCP. Not all of the workstations are on the same subnet.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to resolve the IP's that
use squid to their appropriate workstation name?

Thanks,

Kevin
