I am running squid v. 2.4.STABLE7 on FreeBSD v. FreeBSD 4.6-RELEASE #2

I am constantly running into this problem. I get entries like these in

Nov 4 09:01:06 reavis2 squid[159]: Finished rebuilding storage from disk.

Sometimes it would even continue until the cache directory filled up the
avail. space in the HD. I created a script to keep an eye on the cache dir,
and stop squid, but it causes the server to go down until I can rectify the
problem.

Any ideas on what could cause this problem?

Please advise?
