  You are using 2.5.PRE7, it would be advisable
  to upgrade to 2.5.STABLE1, as a first step.

  Afterwards, check whether the original problem (slowness), comes up
  again.

  Also, check memory usage of SQUID, compare RSS versus process SIZE
  using top , for instance.
  And using 'vmstat' make sure that no excessive SWAP occurs.
