Yes, but using a real thing is recommended.

The winbind NTLM helper is the best helper available at this time.

The SMB helper also works sometimes but is not very good. If you use it
you should specify several NT logon servers or one or more Samba servers
to work around limitations in Windows servers (does not need to be
domain controllers, any NT or Samba servers will do).
