Default? Both fulesystems are available by default in the Linux kernel
tree, and most modern distros allows you to select either..

From what I recall the last measuring indicated

  reiserfs <= ext2 <= ext3

for Squid HTTP proxy performance, but only by a small margin, perhaps
even outside the statistical variance.
