Is there a command that you can type to find out if Samba RPM
has -with-winbind-auth-challenge compiled in?

Yes - that was the problem.  I didn't realise that the RedHat RPMS had
not enabled -with-winbind-auth-challenge.  Installed Samba from source
and it worked fine :-)
