There is in Squid-2.5 and later.. for this very reason.
squid -v
Earlier Squid versions (2.4 and earlier) unfortunately only reports their
version number on "squid -v".
Note: There is no "Squid 5" version. Latest is 2.5 with 3.0 in
development/testing.
