The size will grow for a while after start, but should stabilize after
some time at maximum load (assuming the cache is already full). This
usually takes a day or so.

If it does not stabilize then there is a problem.

The size should barely ever decrease. If you have a situation where the
size of Squid increases a lot and then decreases by close to the same
amount then there most likely is a serious problem.

If you have a situation where the size of Squid is stable for a long
while, and then starts to increase a lot, then there is a problem.

If you have a situation where the size of Squid more or less constantly
increases then there is a problem.

All of these patterns are best identified by graphing the process size.
mrtg or rrdtool is very good for this purpose.
