The Squid-2.5 ntlm_auth does not at all use Samba. It uses SMB to a NT
server of choice.

The Squid-2.5 ntlm_auth is generally unstable and unsuitable for
production use. It works if you are testing with one or maybe two causal
users, but not when you have many users.

if you insist on using the Squid-2.5 ntlm_auth helper then I recommend
specifying a Samba server for it to use as login server. This because the
Samba server works better than Windows servers for authenticating many
users from the same station (the Squid server).

the future is with no doubt in using winbind based helpers, especially in
using Samba-3 or later with it's native winbind helper.

Henrik
