I tried 2.5.STABLE6 and have the same problem.  Has anyone else dealt
with NTLM over the internet through squid?

Try squid 2.5.STABLE6, to possiblyavoid hazards, with sites attempting
ntlm
over http (proxies).
Or when you have more project allocated time :
    # /bin/rm -rf MS From_the_Internet
