Thanks for the info, Adam. It didn't do the trick, sadly.

I have done some experiments:
- If I turn the modem off after I have booted up, then eventually the browser
says that the site cannot be found. This does not seem to be a squid msg.
- If I then turn the modem on and wait a few moments before clicking refresh,
then sure enough the site comes up, as you'd expect.

But if the modem is turned off when the machine is booting, then turning the
modem on does not help. I have to restart squid.

I have tried this with the dns_negative_ttl in squid.conf to "20 seconds".
Perhaps I changed it wrong? But as the default appears to be 1 minute, I
don't think this can be the issue - the connection is unavailable for much
longer than that.

I should probably describe my set up (not sure that I did in my original
note). My browser is using something called dansguardian as a proxy, this
being a content filter to keep my children away from accidental visits to
dodgy sites. This in turn is using squid as a proxy.

Thanks in advance for any more suggestions or clarifications
