Cheers for the responses guys!

Christoph:

Yeah, my browsers pointing in the correct place.

I had a look at the 'ps' command, is that for process threads? I added the
'f' switch as it sound cool, which turned up a main instance of squid with
a child, the child also had its own child, which in turn had about ten to
fifteen children.

I moved on to try "/usr/lib/squid/ncsa_auth /etc/squid/proxy_users", fumbled
with it for a while, then click with it! It's validating the passwords fine.

> <cough> ;)
lol, it's hard coded into the exchange, sorry.

Ghislain:

Cheers, I've ran a test to see if IPCop configures squid. From it's GUI I
can change the proxy port, this changed the squid port in the squid.conf, I
assume it makes the necessary adjustments to the IPTables, I shall learn how
to read these then verify this.

Jakob:

Hi, Squid was installed and configured during the IPCop install. I am now
going through the install to lock down its configuration. All paths given
are correct and all files exist.

Proxy_users is a file with "USER_NAME:MD5_ENCRYPTED_PASSWORD" per user, per
line.

Shall I post the config's? I have one which works and another that tries to
use authentication and produces the aforementioned error.

Yet again, thanks everybody
