Squid is limited by the number of filedescriptors it has available;
depending on various factors (backend server responsiveness, cache hit
ratio) the number of clients it can support can range from that number
to about half of it.

It's not unusual for pre-packaged squid binaries to be configured for
1024 Filedescriptors; custom-built binaries can get pretty high (I used
to build mine with 8k or 16k filedescriptors available per process).
