Thanks for your response. I do have squid source code with me. The src directory has bunch of C files. Cache_mngr.c, ipcache.c and so on, would it be possible to nail down a few files which would possibly talk about squid's techniques for caching so I can look into those.

Exactly the same. Just with index data saying its zipped or non-zipped.

No. Squid uses completely different methods, based around quick hashes.
