It is hard to tell which if those "normal" stats is the unusual one.

The top set is serving mostly from cache_dir. The lower set mostly from
cache_mem.

"free memory on this machine " has nothing to do with it. Squid only
uses the amount of RAM you allocate it to use as cache_mem for memory
cached HTTP objects.
