It _is_ doable, just very complex, more expensive and less reliable
than using a cluster of servers with a load-balancing frontend.
You'd probably need about 8 cpu cores, with a matching number of
physical disks and a setup like described at
http://wiki.squid-cache.org/ConfigExamples/ExtremeCarpFrontend#Frontend_Balancer_Alternative_1:_iptables
