There seems to be at least two major competing initiatives for content
scanning.

CVP, Content Vectoring Protocol
By Checkpoint, supported by a number of products

CCI, Common Content Inspection API
Joint effort by many of the players in the fiewall/antivirus area. Seems
to be a open continuation of CVP

ICAP, the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol
Wider scope protocol, intended to all forms of content scanning or
modification. Seems to be mostly driven by the proxy/CDN people.
