TCP Connection failures

Hi, squid´ers,
we have installed two squid proxies, one parent proxy on a machine with internet connectivity, the other one inside an internal network. The client squid looses connection ("TCP connection to xxx failed") to its parent squid very often (see log below for an example: 4 connection losses per hour). It seems to get worse if the squid load is heavy.

I have patched the source (neighbors.c) so that the retry interval is reduced to 5 seconds (default is 90 seconds): Thanks to this patch (thanks to Gert-Jan Looy for this hint), the users only have a blackout time of 5 seconds. Most browsers will auto-retry and the users only notice a small delay. Still, large downloads have a nearly 100 Percent chance to get aborted due to the TCP connection failure.

Other services run very well between these two machines, so it is definitly no hardware or network or firewall problem. I also heard of other squid users having these problems, so it seems not to be related to our installation only.

Is anybody working on this problem? Can I supply some help in terms of logfiles or debug features or something (I can reproduce this problem very easy: It´s happening every few hours).

Both machines are running linux 2.0.29 and squid 1.1.8, but I heared of other (newer) squid versions having exactly the same problem (e.g., squid 1.1.16 on a svr4).
