Squid can only proxy/cache http://, ftp:// and gopher:// - requests,
it can also proxy https:// (SSL-Connects) and wais.

It does not/can not proxy 'real' ftp or news connections.

For news-'proxy' I can recommend dnews, see
http://netwinsite.com/dnews.htm . For universities and schools using
it for a non profit purpose it's free.
