What is the cooling around your disk? Busy disks generate some heat, and
a standard PC chassis has far from ideal cooling (almost non-existent in
most cases)...

Try putting the disk in a decent external cabinet, as these tend to have
a much more directed cooling (and it greatly simplifies replacing the
disk when it fails, which disks do sooner or later).

A disk that is kept well within the specified working temperature feels
much better than a disk that gets overheated each time it has to much to
do.
